Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
