Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies pose an existential threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Divide Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly American. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is split among 27 different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major reforms.

With the right policies and rule changes, these assets could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
