Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, the judge said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could offer prayers for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the possibility of the former president's transfer to embassies near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a record of organizing to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

International Reactions

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to murder Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were detained.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
