'Treat game'
Mary Prior KC, presenting evidence, described the criminal behavior to the court.
She stated his those affected were disadvantaged youngsters who were staying at a summer camp which he managed.
Ruben played a "treat game" with the minors, the prosecutor said, in which he would go into the sleeping quarters when they were preparing to sleep and ask them to eat sweets "as fast as possible".
She informed the proceedings the defendant had conducted this practice with the children "repeatedly", and youngsters had earlier experienced illness the next day.
She explained the man had been able to explain this repeatedly as the children being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepchild had suspicions in summer 2025.
The prosecutor stated further: "Recently" his stepchild had worries about the situation, for good reason.
"They decided to have a look in the defendant's belongings."
The legal counsel stated items including baby oil, Vaseline and syringes were discovered, and his stepchild alerted the authorities about his concerns.
She said Ruben proceeded to engage in the "candy game" with six boys that night - that Saturday - and they were all sick the subsequent day.
"The police had not gone out by that point," she continued.
The police watchdog, the police conduct office, previously told that it was examining law enforcement's management of the incident.
The legal representative stated the minors were struggling to walk due to their condition, so Ruben's stepson called the police a second time.
