Crew Member Shares Depression After Deluge of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also included well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her studies and years of training to the personal milestone of her roots – was buried under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the supporters whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She noted that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

About the Mission

The fully automated spacecraft launched from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The team of pioneers also featured experts in various fields.

The enterprise behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a well-known tech mogul.
